The only way becoming a lich makes sense is if there's some other benefit to being a lich (infinite resurrection is, honestly, a teensy safer than having a clone at the ready) or it was easier to become a lich than it is to use the clone spell. For example, I view lichdom as a last resort for spell casters who could not access the clone spell: incapable of finding the spell, wasn't able to learn it, or too low level to access it. I often imagine that the process of becoming a lich is just easier for casters at a lower level, or is given as a reward/punishment by deities.

I see two problems... 1. its an 8th level spell slot so fat chance a wizard lives long enough to aquire 8th level spell slots 2. Material components required include a diamond worth at least 1000g and a vessel worth at least 2000g. A wizard would probably not have time to do anything with their seemingly infinite time as they will be hustling like mad to garner that money. (Unless the wizard's last name was trump)

You could consider that they are giving up their soul for an immortal life meaning they value their life over their soul meaning they may not care for the survival of their soul but of their physical body and mind, like would you rather reincarnation or immortality

I played a character with the clone mechanic (an alchemist/artificer) and to balance it out I agree with the Dungeon Master. Each Death will prevent me to reach a Lv from the max 20 lvs. Meaning if died 3 times, the max Lv I could be was 17. I think it's a nice way to balance it if the character perishes beyond his lv. Let's say I'm was lv 15 but perished 6 times, I would come back as lv 14 max once I clone 20 times, my soul would sense to exist. NO afterlife, no resurrection, do to the stress the soul was put through those 20 times avoiding death.

As far as i read the lich lore it says they want to be powerful beyond measure. I think being undead would grand them abilities that their mortal coil qould be unable to attain.

This is why our DM gives the bosses custom insane hp, he knows we watch videos like these and we have op builds xd.

Dm workaround: any clone made at a different age only appears to be a different age and would die of old age at the same time you would originally

So there’s a magician in the lore that did that. Each and everyone of his clones went mad after the spellplague and think they are the original, now they hunt the other clones to be the only one remaining. It’s Manshun, and he is the bad guy in the winter version of Waterdeep Dragon Heist

But you do also gain a lot of benefits in lore if you are a necromancer. The immortal life is just an added bonus unless fifth edition changed that too

I guess the difference is that if you become a lich successfully, you don't have to worry about cloning yourself then ending yourself every 60 or so years.

I mean if someone rocks up, catching you off guard and killing you. You won't have time to do the clone trick. A lich doesn't share that weakness. Sure they can go and destroy your phylactery but you can have a lot of safe guards and monitoring to protect it and know when someone is close to it.

Yea, these seem bad; Spamming minor modifications to the enemy that often won't matter isn't that much of a bonus. At best, this will just encourage players to only use the specific weapons that give the most tactical advantage. (Likely advantage on an attack roll, knocking prone, and cleave for hordes) Keeping track of a wide variety of relatively minor conditions like this is what slowed down the 4e version of the game, and realistically I only see this being a bigger issue when used against the players.

Why would anyone think taking the class feature and sharing it is a good idea? Why not make rage a feat that everyone can use? Or sneak attack? Lets give everyone wild shape!
